Examples of disasters the UK has seen:
  • Flooding in Yorkshire, Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire July 2007 
  • Tornado in Kensal Rise in December 2006 -  Damage to more than 100 houses.
  • Fire at the Cowdray Centre on the 8th July 2006  - this did not make national headlines, but 60 small businesses were affected, some never resumed trading.
  • Terrorist attack in London 7/7 2005
  • Tornado in Birmingham July 2005 - 19 people injured and hundreds of properties were affected.
  • Carlisle flooding January 2005 - 3,000 properties flooded, two lives lost.
  • Boscastle August 2004 - flash floods left many local businesses without premises and local people without homes.
  • Fire in a BT tunnel in Manchester, March 2004 - 130,000 phone lines affected.
  • British Midlands 737 Kegworth air crash January 1989 - 46 people killed.
  • Earthquakes in the UK - yes we do get them! All be it mostly small in magnitude but the Dumfries earthquake on 26 December 2006 registered 3.5 on the Richter Scale.
